1st XI 2-2 Nelson FC 1st XI

Location: Wakefield Domain

Goals: Will Mathews

Match MVP: Heyden Nunn/Joe Robertson

A mid-week catch up game against an undefeated Nelson Suburbs Reserves saw us faced with the old adage of “but can you do it on a cold night in Wakefield”?

Undeterred by a couple of ring-ins from Suburbs Mainland team, the Tahuna boys came out of the sheds firing and got stuck into to the game. The first half saw Tahuna shutting down Nelson and keeping them in their own half with limited opportunities going forward, while Tahuna grew into the game and created a few chances to no avail.

TFC finally found a breakthrough courtesy of some hustle by the recently-returned Heyds leading the attacking line, wrestling the ball free while on the ground against some imposing defenders on the edge of the box with the ball eventually finding its way to Will Matthews who slotted a superbly struck shot low and hard to the goalies far post. 1-nil to Tahuna (and the first time Suburbs had been behind all season). Both teams continued to work into the game and traded blows, with neither able to nab the next goal. Some cracking saves from Joe throughout the half kept us 1 nil up at the break (could have earned himself a beer or two if he wasn’t doing dry July).

The start of the second half saw Tahuna continue to dominate the game and create a couple more chances to try and put the game away but luck wasn’t falling our way. With a packed Tahuna bench (as rare as Suburbs falling behind this season) the changes began to roll. Unfortunately, Suburbs changes made an instant impact, helping set up Tahuna alumni Jamie “Gooks” McGookin for two quick goals to put the game in Suburbs favour. 2-1 down with 10 to go, our boys struggled to get any more shots away and the score unfortunately remained 2-1. A proud effort by the boys to give Suburbs a scare, but we are all disappointed we couldn’t close it out and get some well-deserved points against a stacked Suburbs team.

We go again this Saturday at home in our second to last home game of the season, in what is shaping up as a big game in the middle of the table against a quality Nelson Seals team. Get down and support the boys as they look to make a late charge up the table and upset some teams.

Special mention to the supporters who braved the cold to come out and watch a great game.
