2nd XI 0-0 FC Nelson 3rds

Location: Ngawhatu Reserve

Match MVP: Joe Walton

FC win 5:4 on penalties after extra time.

The Tahuna legends quest for cup and double glory saw them drawn against a strong FC Nelson side looking to avenge their last minute defeat a few weeks prior. The sun shone bright but the long grass and bobbly Ngawhatu surface meant conditions for silky passing football were less than ideal and, in truth, most of the match was a dogfight with Tahuna in the possession and territory ascendancy, but unable to carve out any real chances against a dogged FC Nelson back five.

Not to say FC Nelson didn't carry a goal threat, as a thunderbolt from distance forced a fine stop from keeper Will in the first half and only the woodwork denying a late FC Nelson smash'n'grab following an Eric airswing at a throughball.

Despite a myriad of personnel and formation changes at the end of 90 then 120 minutes, much like everyone's calves and hamstrings, the score remained locked.

So, on with penalties. Known for his work in the football community, Geeza generously offered the FC nelson keeper a passback with the first PK. Duane buried his in the top corner. Gus launched his over the crossbar. Jamie's effort was saved but, with the keeper judged to have left his line too early, was granted a retake which he coolly tucked away. Joseph's was much the same as Geeza's but the goalie fell the wrong way. All of which meant with some stellar work from Will between the sticks, the shootout proceeded to sudden death.

FC dispatched theirs, Dr Ed finished with surgical precision, then FC again, then, unfortunately for our keeper, following an outstanding shootout, game and season, Will saw his must make effort saved and FC Nelson celebrations commenced. An anticlimactic way to end an otherwise brilliant season. Bring on Div 2.
